I'm surprised you're still with me after my epic blogging break. I wondered whether to scrap this one and start again, but what the hell - there's some comfort in familiarity.

Since my last post, quite a lot has happened - but I guess the biggest thing, from a fitness point of view (because that's what this blog is really about), is that I joined a CrossFit box just under a year ago and have spent the last few months in a cycle of sweat, muscle soreness, elation and disappointment.

Don't get me wrong - I love CrossFit. I wish it had been around when I was a teenager, so I could've switched my life to a more positive one much earlier and not messed around in my twenties not giving a shit about anything, least of all myself. Many of you will know that I've had periods of depression and that during those times I felt, at best, totally inept. Those feelings never totally leave you, although you get to learn the triggers and how to manage them - and I guess this is one of the things that CF helps me with the most. That's not to say I don't beat myself up if I struggle to make lifts - but I don't think that will ever change.

Last weekend was a huge mental battle for me - I competed at a CF event, European Inferno, in Cardiff, in front of about 1,000 people. It was tough - not only because of my shoulder injury but because it was just so daunting. I've never been good enough to compete at anything before. When people ask me for advice on getting fit they often have that kind of accusatory look that suggests I find it easy - well I really, really don't. Every time I step into the gym it bloody hurts - it doesn't get easier. Burpees - yep, still hurt. That first 3km of a run - yep, still get stitch and feel like I'm going to die. So when I stood up there with those incredible athletes I had a major wobble. But I got through it, and we didn't come last - I put everything into it and, aside from a bit of an emotional breakdown at the end of the final WoD, for the first time since Berlin I felt pretty proud of what I'd achieved. It wasn't pretty, however - and it really did show up my weaknesses in terms of form and general fitness, but at least it showed me some of the main areas I need to focus on.

I'm not the easiest person to coach - I let competitiveness get in the way of perfection and that's something I know I need to work on. This blog is going to help me, because for the next few months I'm going to be easing off the weight and concentrating on form. There's nothing I can do about my wonky skeleton, but I can rest my shoulder until it's fully recovered and work on flexibility through my back, hips and hamstrings. My glutes are practically non-existent so there'll be a lot of focus on strengthening through there, and I'll be concentrating on posture to help reduce the curve in my lower back.
I'm going to be building in some yoga for flexibility, a Pilates class to improve core strength and swimming once a week to help build up my shoulders in a low impact way. I'm also going to try for at least a couple of 5k runs and some intervals each week - hopefully this will feed my competitive side (racing against myself is always fun) as well as improving my cardio fitness.

In between all this, I'll work with the coaches to drill technique at low weight so I feel comfortable getting under and lifting the bar. Hopefully by the New Year I'll feel ready to start adding some weight - but I'm looking at this as a long term thing.

Since the end of August, to be precise. I am going to use the age-old 'insanely busy' excuse and move on, swiftly.

The truth is, I have been working super hard, running a lot and being Mummy to my beautiful Miss Ruby - so there's been little time for anything else.

Since I last posted I ran the Berlin Marathon. It was what this whole blog was leading up to. I won't lie - it was hugely painful - after the Dr advised me not to run, I had a few weeks off training (including a lovely, slightly raucous week in Ibiza for my beautiful friend's wedding). So when I lined up with 40,000 other people at the Brandenburg Gate, I'd never felt so unprepared for anything. I was petrified. I can still remember it so clearly - this overriding thought that there was no way in a million years I'd be able to get to the end.

Thankfully, I had so many messages of support - some made me laugh, others made me want to sit down in the middle of the road and sob my heart out because the people that I love and respect most in the whole world were telling me that they believed in me. It made me run, and run, and run.

The last 3km were hell - my hips had completely gone so I had to alternate between walking and jogging. I swear the finish line got further and further away - I must have looked like I was going to pass out because as soon as I crossed the line a volunteer grabbed me and ushered me into the first aid tent. All I could think about was that I had done it for Miss Ruby, and that they'd better not have given out all the medals already.

Fast forward three months and I am planning in my races for 2013. No marathons this year, mainly 10km's, with the Sheffield Half Marathon, Wales Half Marathon and Tough Mudder thrown in for good measure (I didn't get to run Tough Mudder last year - I was gutted).

I'm working super hard on my running at the moment - specifically getting my time down for 5km. I have been running parkrun every week, which is really helping because I am ridiculously competitive. My very first parkrun was back in March last year and I think I ran it in 38 minutes - today I knocked almost a minute off my PB from last week, running in 25:58. My goal is to get down to 22 minutes by the end of the year.

I'm pretty excited about Tuesday night - I have my first run with Nidd Valley Road Runners, which I'm hoping will help me improve my speed and technique. I'm still suffering pretty badly with excruciating stitch on some of my faster runs and it's probably the most frustrating thing ever - my legs and head are all saying GO but my diaphragm is spazzing out of control. Ouch.

Lastly (for now) - I have a new challenge. Feeling pretty overfaced with it right now, but hopefully this time next year I will have chalked up 1000 miles. I'm thinking with the running club and all the races I have coming up (10 at last count - trying for one every month) it should be achievable.

Oh, and I'm going to try and be better at doing this... :)

It is with heavy heart that I have made the decision to end Run Harrogate for the time being. I can't actually do the qualification they're asking for until October at the earliest - so carrying on is impossible.

Here's the last communication I received from HBC - I don't feel they've answered our questions regarding what constitutes an 'event', but wanted to share with you so you can make up your own minds:

Dear Miss Ward

RUN HARROGATE - THE STRAY

Further to our email correspondence regarding the 3K Run Harrogate being held each Thursday on The Stray, I have now heard a little more about your event.

Based on the information the council now has, it appears that you are operating a Running Club. In fact you have yourself thought about public liability as you say you have asked everyone taking part with Run Harrogate to sign a disclaimer form. It will be for you to decide whether that disclaimer would cover any liability you may have personally for running the Club.

The council has to make sure, when organised events are taking place on public land it owns or manages, that all public liability is being met and that appropriate risk assessments have been carried out so that it can take into account the safety and well-being of those involved. This is the climate we have to operate in and you may wish to clarify your own liability if you are to continue and/or expand the Club.

As I have said earlier, running on The Stray with friends or family is fine, that’s what the area is to be used for. But when sessions are carried out on a regular more formalised basis and you are inviting people or groups to attend (as your piece in the local paper was doing), then we have to consider this as an organised event and one which has to follow guidelines put in place to protect not only those taking part but other users of the council’s facilities too.

The council is very happy for such organised events to be held on The Stray but there are guidelines for organisers who should:

check with the land owner or those responsible for it (Harrogate Borough Council in this instance as managers on behalf of the Duchy of Lancaster) that they are happy for this organised activity to take place on their land.

follow the guidelines set out for the use of that piece of land for that specific event or activity; these would be assessed from the application form submitted by the applicant.

have sufficient public liability insurance, and also has sufficient skills to provide the event or activity in a safe manner.

We also ask such organisers to read and sign, as part of the application form, a section which indemnifies the council as follows -

I understand that organisers must indemnify the council against all actions, claims and expenses arising directly or indirectly out of the event or the presence of any of the organisers or of their goods and materials present on the land during the event or not properly removed therefrom unless the claims and expenses are as a result of the negligence of the council, its agents or officers.

The guidance notes and application form are attached and we will happily help you complete the application form. You may want to think about contacting the Athletics’ Association who will also be able to give you advice and guidance particularly in relation to insurance.

If you wish to carry on with your run informally with just your friends or family, then that will be fine and we will be happy for you to do so. But if you do wish to carry on with the Running Club then we will have to ask you not to promote it to the general public until you have followed the guidelines in regard to insurance and risk assessments.

Please let me know what you decide to do.

Here's my reply:

Dear Mr Middleton,

Further to your e-mail below, I can confirm that Run Harrogate has now been disbanded.

I have sent out a Tweet to that effect, and will be closing down the Twitter account within the next week.

It's such a shame that the encouragement of physical activity (I maintain that this was a support group, not a club) is so discouraged by HBC - especially when just over a quarter of adults were classified as obese in 2010. I'm sure you don't need to be made aware of the serious health risks associated with obesity - not to mention that it's set to cost the NHS around £6.3 billion in just three years' time.

Whilst you make it clear that The Stray is available for all to use - perhaps a review of what constitutes an event - and indeed the way in which communications are made - is necessary. I feel that 'events' like Run Harrogate should be supported - encouraged, even. You could supply contact information for the relevant organisations (Run England, insurance companies etc) on a simple fact sheet - at least that way you're seen as being slightly more helpful.

Still, thank you for taking the time to contact me and review our situation.

Kind regards,

Sam

So, there we have it. Consider the CLUB disbanded.

Luckily, I have met some lovely friends through Run Harrogate - and I hope that we shall all continue to run together every Thursday evening. Same time, same place.

Much love,

I've had a reply to my e-mail from HBC. Here's the full communication so far - just so everything's totally transparent:

It has been brought to my attention and from reading the local newspaper that you are holding fitness activities on The Stray.

Although there isn’t a problem with you using The Stray to hold these activities, as events, The Council does need to manage activities that take place on land that it manages, and as with Park Run we need to ensure that you have completed a sufficient risk assessment and hold public liability insurance to a minimum of £5 million and have completed the relevant paperwork, we also need to ensure that the staff holding the activity have sufficient qualifications to carry out these activities.

Please can I ask that you submit the relevant information prior to continuing your activities on The Stray.

Dear Michael,

Thank you for your e-mail. I've informed the group that we can no longer meet to run as I have neither a qualification or PLI. I wasn't aware that this would be required, as we are just like minded people meeting to go for a run. No education takes place, and everyone signs a sheet to say that they are running entirely at their own risk.

I can understand how frustrating this is, as with any organised event we do need to ensure that these activities are carried out in a safe and secure manner, we also need to know who is using any Harrogate Borough Council land, to ensure that these activities don’t clash alongside other activities.

We encourage people to use the facilities, just sometimes we have to check we are happy with what is taking place, I would ask that if any of your friends or colleagues are thinking of similar projects that they take a look at our event paperwork at http://www.harrogate.gov.uk/pos/Pages/harrogate-5878.aspx which will give you some idea of the details we need.

Running along The Stray with a couple of friends or family is fine, that’s what the area is to be used, you just need to be a little more careful when you start to carry out these sessions on a regular basis and are inviting people or groups to attend, we felt that your piece in the local paper was maybe some kind of advertising campaign, which is why it was brought to my attention to have a look at.

I am happy to help you move things forward as quickly as possible, but think for the time being you need to look at getting some sort of qualification, and for the protection of yourself and those taking your sessions you will need to have public liability to a minimum of £5 million.

Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any further help

So, I thought I'd better post to give you my views on the recent RunHarrogate furore that's sent Twitter into a bit of a frenzy.

As a bit of background (and those of you who know all this, I'm sorry - I'll keep it brief), I started RunHarrogate back in May because, quite frankly, I was petrified. The thought of running by myself was daunting to sway the least - I'd just had a baby, I knew nothing about running and I ran under the cover of darkness.
I figured other people must feel the same, so I sent out a Tweet - would anyone like to come and run with me? We could support each other - safety in number and all that. RunHarrogate was born.

Fast forward a few months and we now have a core group of 15-20 runners, with more dipping in and out as commitments allow. I love this group - they make me smile (and, admittedly, beam with complete pride) every week; I've seen people (myself included) go from walking around the course to running, full pelt, head held high. Their fitness levels have improved beyond belief and they now take part in the weekly 5km Park Run as well.

Anyway, without getting too teary-eyed about it, Harrogate Council got in touch to say that unless I had a running qualification and £5million public liability insurance then I was to stop the group.

I was taken aback, to say the least. Bearing in mind I don't teach anyone - I've always been very honest about not knowing the first thing about running - and it's a free group that is literally there just so that people have the motivation to get healthy. I also send out a fortnightly newsletter to everyone with a disclaimer to say that they run entirely at their own risk.

I don't want to ride on the back of the Olympic coat tails but, really? We've just seen the biggest sporting event in the UK, well...Ever. Everyone's excited and energised to get involved in sport. Just let us run.

I don't want to fall out with anyone and totally understand sanctions are put in place for a reason but where does it end? The Stray is a public place - what if a group of mates wanted to get together once a week for a game of football or picnic? Is this an 'event'?

It remains to be seen. The local media has been amazing - I've done interviews with the Yorkshire Post and BBC Radio York, with another on StrayFM on Monday. People feel so strongly about this and the support has been amazing. Hopefully we can work with Harrogate Borough Council and reach a solution - it would be such a shame if we had to lose the group.

In the meantime, I'm off running on Thursday next week, around 6:30pm. Might see you there (coincidentally, of course).

Finally, I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone on Twitter who has sent a supportive message or retweeted our concerns - every single one has been absolutely AWESOME.

When I went to visit my lovely physiotherapist, Vicky last night, I have to say I wasn't expecting her to say she was going to stick a needle in my leg. However, acupuncture has been used for years as a way of encouraging blood circulation to the affected area, promoting repair - magic!

Anyway, it has worked an absolute treat - my hip is feeling much better and I think I'm going to attempt a very slow jog with the Run Harrogate crew this evening. I have a massage booked tomorrow and a further physio session on Saturday morning, so fingers crossed I won't be too far behind schedule.

Vicky also noticed that my hamstrings are incredibly tight and suggested that may be partly to blame for my injury - my hips could be overcompensating. So more than ever, I am learning that stretching properly is as important as the run itself. I have some new stretches to incorporate now, so fingers crossed it will help. I am also going to start taking ibuprofen half an hour before my runs and when I get back - this will prevent a build up of muscle inflammation, which is obviously a huge problem for me at the moment.

Anyway, I'll keep this one short, I know I've already posted about food today!

I've been meaning to - honest, it's just that I've been busy running (most of the time).

Excuses out of the way, I can get on with it. I'm feeling so positive about Berlin now - last night I broke three of my PB's in one, mad, running swoop. I took four minutes off my 10km time, ran further and ran for longer than I ever have before. This pleases me greatly. I am so competitive it's sometimes scary - and although I mostly just battle with myself, I love it when I am better at something than I ever thought I could be.

Last night I ran 12km. I was aiming for 16km (10 miles) and although I am kicking myself this morning for not cracking it, last night I was beyond pleased. I was running 40seconds/km faster than my last 10km and it felt good. My legs are sore today - but no pain, no gain. I could've run for longer - it's just that I got... Well, bored of running.

So this is it - I know I can manage the physical side of this running lark - I'm in better shape than I ever have been (apart from my dastardly post-baby tummy wobble, which I'm not sure I'll ever get rid of), but mentally - well, that needs work.

The book I have chosen to help my training (The non-runner's guide to marathon running) has a whole section in it dedicated to the psychology of running for such long distances - more than ever this is something I need to focus on.

It also occurred to me last night that I never get thirsty while running. When I first started out, taking on fluids used to give me the dreaded stitch, so I stopped. Even after my run last night I wasn't particularly parched. So this is something I need help with. When are the best times to drink? What about energy gels? I know nothing about these things. So, if anyone out there knows anything about this kind of stuff, I'll be eternally grateful for a little advice.

If I can keep upping my distances by 3km each week, I'll be at my target come race day. Finally, it's manageable. I'm excited.

Today, I had a terrible run - one of those runs where you question why you're even attempting such a ridiculous challenge. 26 miles is a bloody long way - I was gone at two miles today - totally lethargic all the way and completely empty by the end.

I need to work on my mental strength - even my head was telling me to stop today, when usually I want to just keep going. I felt great when I was on Lean Body Challenge - obviously because I was putting the right fuel into my body, so it was working as it should. Too much wine this weekend has really taken its toll - so I'll be booze free for the coming weeks - just until I can sort my head out.

I seem to have passed 50 miles on my counter without blogging about it - next milestone is 100 but I have a way to go yet... I'll pass 100km this week; even though I'm beating myself up about my performance today, never in my life did I think I'd be able to run 100km - or even have the inclination to. So I guess that's something I can be proud of.

Anyway, I hate blogging when I'm feeling negative - I just wanted to start out July as I mean to go on - regular posts, unlike June! Fingers crossed Tuesday's run will be a turning point...

Sam xSamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00536063359916269317noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6800440856228277748.post-69508537090222709822012-06-23T09:38:00.001+01:002012-06-23T09:38:22.659+01:00InspirationalThis week, I was called 'inspirational' by one of my friends. I have never been called inspirational by anyone before and it kind of knocked me sideways a little bit - mainly because it was so unexpected and, to be honest, I don't really feel like I have done anything to warrant it.

I'd had maybe two weeks of not keeping up my (now) regular regime of running at least four times a week, and Shredding on the days between (or even on the same day). I got a little lax - there was a festival, a hen party and a whole bag of excuses I won't even shame myself by bringing to the table. I'd seen some epic results, losing just over a stone since I started training seriously - a mixture of Lean Body Challenge and sheer determination.

Anyway, I hadn't been out in a little while and that silly fear of running alone had crept back into my mind. I kept promising myself I'd get out later, or the next day. When I shared my fears with the wonderful world of Twitter, one person stood out amongst all the loveliness; Katherine had never run before but she said I was her inspiration for getting out there - it's thanks to her that I got straight out of bed and churned out one of the most painful 3kms to date, and followed it up with run club that evening.

Katherine's words were super kind, but I look around at what everyone else is achieving and I can't accept them - one person who has stood out this week is Taff - a crazy Welsh Army dude based here in Harrogate who is doing a 24 hour run/walk in aid of Help for Heroes, Diabetes UK, NSPCC (because, he says, he's a big kid at heart) and Cancer Research UK. Taff is basically doing (as we speak) laps of our regular RunHarrogate 3km route non-stop for 24 hours, starting at 2pm yesterday (22nd June) and finishing at 2pm today. Lindsey and I went out at midnight last night to run a lap with him but ended up staying around for a couple of hours. The weather was like something out of a film - think Twister meets Wizard of Oz - with rivers of water running all over the route and the wind blowing huge swathes of branches from the trees. Taff had been going for 10 hours and was almost at 100km by the time we got there; he had already hit the wall and come through the other side. His feet were absolutely screwed - he couldn't feel four of his toes anymore and had epic blisters everywhere, so needless to say running was no longer an option. We marched with him for over 7km and were knackered come 1:30am - I just can't comprehend the pain he must be going through all to raise money and awareness for such a great bunch of charities - that is proper inspiration right there.

If you want to donate, you can do it here.

In other news, the guys from Harrogate Park Run joined us at 1am - it was so good to meet Adam and his lovely daughter, and get some tips on marathon running for Berlin - Adam ran it back in 2010 and it was good to hear his thoughts on the race. He also recommended a book by Grete Waitz, one of the greatest marathon runners of all time (she won the NYC marathon NINE times).

Hopefully her words will help Lindsey and I cross that finish line in September.

Since then, things have been a little crazy - the response has been great; there are now over 100 followers of @RunHarrogate on Twitter and almost 40 people have signed up to take part.

We had our first session on Thursday; it was really nerve-wracking but everyone was lovely and 15 of us took part, with my physiotherapist, Vicky leading the warm-up. As it was the first session I really didn't know what to expect and other than seeking advice from the lovely Bangs and a Bun, I didn't really do much to prepare. I wanted to go with an open mind and see what kind of pace people were running before making any decisions, which worked out really well as the group fell naturally into three groups: Laid Back and Lovely, Caught in the Middle and Speedy Gonzalez.

For the next session I plan to separate out the groups, choosing someone to lead the pace for each one - hopefully this will encourage some of the less confident runners.

The feedback from the first session was fantastic, with pretty much all of the runners dropping me a little message to say how much they enjoyed it and how welcome they felt, which was great - mission accomplished! Hopefully everyone will take the group to their hearts and become proud of it - but more than that, I hope it helps everyone on the way to reaching their goals.

So all is going well, we have even created a little identity for it:

It's all fairly simple, but it seems to be working, so fingers crossed everyone still wants to come down and run as the weeks go by.

In other news, Lindsey and I are continuing with our preparations for the Berlin Marathon, and are clocking up a decent amount of miles per week. I was hoping to hit the big 50 miles on my blog counter by Monday but not sure that will happen now as I was forced to take a rest day today (my hip felt a little twangy on Friday - I have definitely learnt my lesson!).

On Monday I start the Lean Body Challenge, a three-week programme designed by Leeds fitness guru, Brendan Chaplin. It's pretty complex by the sounds of things so will post about everything's going when I've managed to get to grips with it, but from what I've heard he definitely gets results - hopefully it will get rid of the last of my baby podge!

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">This evening, my Berlin buddy, Lindsey was held up at work and for the first time in ages, I just didn't feel confident enough to hit the streets on my own. I think it was a timing thing - I've never run on my own in the evening before, preferring to jog around the streets of Harrogate under the relative cover of 7am. I feel good running at this time; safe, almost. Hardly anyone will see me, and if they do - well, they're either runners themselves or too bleary-eyed to care.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">So it got me thinking - if I feel this way, surely others must as well. What I need is a group of like-minded people at a similar level who will run at a set time each week. That way if one of us can't make it, the support is still there. And so it started - Run Harrogate was born.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The response in the last half an hour alone has been incredible, with RTs, follows and enthusiastic e-mails about the first meet. So now I'm going to have to figure out a good 3k route - although I don't know if people will want to go further - I guess it's up for discussion, but I would hate to scare anyone off - especially first-timers.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Run Harrogate is a laid back alternative to traditional running clubs, where people can run entirely at their own pace and feel supported by everyone involved in the session - hopefully it will mean that everyone at some point will have the confidence to run the Harrogate Park Run on Saturday mornings, in addition to 3k Thursdays.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">So there we have it - it's all very exciting!
Despite feeling like yesterday, it's almost a week since my last post - I have managed another seven miles and my hip is feeling great, thanks to Vicky and her wonder cure. But we're now just 20 weeks away from Berlin.
Lindsey and I have been out on our first three runs, managing a steady 3k each time. We both had boozy weekends filled with poisonous junk food (hello, Ikea meatballs and Krispy Kreme doughnuts) and it really took its toll. Our run this evening was just shy of the 3k mark and at a very slow pace - but at least we got our asses off the sofa on a Bank Holiday, so I guess it's better than nothing. It is actually pretty scary to see what an impact the food and drink we put into our body has on the way we perform. I went out running with Paul on Sunday morning so didn't feel too bad, but Lindsey felt very light-headed and nauseous so we walked some of the distance. At least lessons were learnt, and we conceded that boozy weekends would become fewer and further between as we approach September.
With my hip now feeling so much better, the temptation is there to go out every day to try and push myself - although I have learnt the hard way that this is the worst thing I could possibly do. It's great that I have the bug again - I'm even typing this extra fast because I'm so excited to get out there.
In spite of regular runs (however short), I have noticed that my weight seems to have plateaued - I have almost given up feeding Ruby myself so I don't have the calorie burn to rely on (500 kcal a day on average), which means I have to look elsewhere. It pains me, but I'm going to have to re-introduce Jillian Michaels and her bloody 30-Day Shred. I actually hate the woman, but she is very good at what she does and I can definitely manage 20 minutes a day.
I'm also knocking the gin on the head for the next few weeks - I'm going to the Races for my friend's hen do mid-June so until then it's strictly nil-by-mouth booze-wise.

In other news, I can't post without mentioning Sheffield Wednesday - what an amazing season, topped off with promotion back into the Championship. The whole experience was all the better as it came at the expense of the other side of the city - the majority of whom seem to have gone very quiet after their 'mind the gap' comments just a few short weeks ago. Football is a funny old game and they gave us a great battle but we're back where we should be - I'm very much looking forward to taking my place as a South Stand season ticket holder in August.

So there it is - I don't think it's too much to ask to hit the 50 mile mark within the next fortnight; we are planning to increase our distances by .5km each time we run so fingers crossed I can stay injury-free.

Happy running,
My running has improved a lot since the physio sessions with Vicky and I have now clocked up 20 miles since I began this journey. It doesn't seem very much, but when I started out I couldn't even run 500 metres and I have been blighted with injury from the start - it's my first milestone of sorts, so I was pretty happy when my last run took me over the line. Next stop - 50!

In terms of Tough Mudder, my whole training regime is now changing after I surprised myself and volunteered to run the Berlin Marathon for Children with Cancer. I wanted to run Berlin a couple of years ago - my Dad ran it three times and we actually lived in Germany for three years when I was very little. I have the most amazing memories of Christmas markets with beautiful, sparkly decorations and the deepest snow imaginable - although I think it maybe just seemed really deep because I was so small. The chocolate is much better in Germany than over here and Easter is a huge deal - I remember these cute little chocolate ladybirds my sister and I used to eat, and I found some in this beautiful independent chocolate shop in Sheffield last weekend.

Anyway, I digress. I just wanted to write a little about how much I'm looking forward to going - it will be 28 years since I left but I'm hoping it will stir up a few memories.

So, I spoke to a lovely man at Children with Cancer called Ben. He ran Berlin last year and said it's a great course for a first marathon as it's predominately flat. The world record was set there and it's described as the fastest course in the world. Not that this has any relevance to me - if I get to the finish line I'll be over the moon - although we are going to try and finish in a time of around 4:30. My partner in crime for this event is the lovely Lindsey McNally, who was the one person I knew would say yes in a heartbeat; I had already signed her up before asking the question so I was more relieved than anything when she agreed. Tomorrow night will be our first training run and we plan to do it by the book - starting off slowly and building it up using the MARCO pacing strategy. If we run to an average pace of 10:18mi then we should finish just shy of 4:30 and we have 21 weeks left to train.

In addition to the marathon training, I am also going to be doing circuits at Performax at least once a week. I went last night for the first time in ages and absolutely loved it - Justin has moved to a new studio just out of town and there's oodles more space, so he has installed a TRX machine which I can see myself getting completely addicted to - our nine minute circuits last night included squat pulls followed by leg extensions on the TRX followed by; squat push with 10kg kettlebell, push up to plank, squat-hold with 5kg medicine ball, tricep dips, side twists with 5kg medicine ball (all on Powerplate), burpee to push up with one of those horrible air filled domes and then this weird rope exercise which makes you look like you're interviewing for a job as Santa. Anyway, all that three times and I was knackered, but it also felt amazing to be back in the studio so a big thank you to Justin for that.

I have started a countdown to Berlin now - 151 days until Lindsey and I line up against 30,000 others at the Brandenberg Gate. Holy crap.

I was referred for physio at the BMI Hospital in Harrogate and my therapist, Vicky has been incredible. Not only is she a very lovely lady, she seems to have worked miracles on my hip. The problem lies in the piriformis - a pear-shaped muscle responsible for the flexibility of the hip joint. Apparently it's quite common for runners (still don't think I can call myself that) to have issues with the piriformis - mainly due to a lack of adequate stretching both before and after a run.

Anyway, after two sessions of physio, a little more rest and a week of gritted teeth, I was finally able to set out on a run on Friday morning. I won't lie, it was tough - I lacked a huge amount of confidence and as such picked a route which was more focused on avoiding the general public than tailored to a first run out in three weeks.

I hurt afterwards - my hip was throbbing and my time was disappointing. I took five minutes to lie down (in all honesty, I had no choice) and wanted to slap myself around the chops. I thought about how far I had come - despite my run of bad luck injury-wise I was still able to run a 9.38 mile - a good two minutes faster than when I had first started, and I'm not even fully fit.

To many people, this will seem like a terrible time but for me it is a sign of determination. Getting out there and pounding the pathways of Harrogate is not easy at the moment - I want to go further, faster and be much closer to my goal. But I am where I am, and pushing myself too far too soon will only make things worse (the story of my training life so far!)

I'm planning on heading out tomorrow morning and will force myself to take a better route - the one I ran on Friday did me no favours as over half of it was on an incline. Proper planning and all that malarkey!

In other news, I just realised that I won't be able to run the Harrogate 10k as I'll be at a wedding that weekend, which is a real shame. I'll also miss out on the BUPA Great Yorkshire Run - even more gutting as it passes past the South Stand at Hillsborough - my home every other Saturday next season - I can't imagine getting a better lift than that at halfway. I fly to Ibiza that day for my beautiful friend, Jessica's wedding where I am Maid of Honour - so that takes the sting out of it slightly!

Lastly, a huge amount of respect and biggedy-ups go out to Andy Broomhead - my Twitter friend who is, as I speak, running the London Marathon. I've been watching it since the beginning and boo-hoo-ing at some of the amazing fundraising stories. It's inspired me to run, run, run - maybe even a marathon next year, even though I said I never would... So well done, Andy - great effort and all your Twitter buddies are incredibly proud of you.
Maybe that's why Tough Mudder is so appealing. Pounding hot tarmac around a flat marathon route is just not for me, but that's not to say I don't have a huge amount of respect for those who can - crikey, anyone who can run almost 30 miles is a superhero in my eyes.
Anyway, I headed out this morning before I had chance to talk myself out of it and it felt amazing just to be outside and running. I took it really steady, petrified I would not only aggravate my existing injury, but maybe jolt something else and be out for even longer.
Dr Lucy told me that progesterone, which you produce when you're breastfeeding, makes your joints looser, especially around your pelvic region and that recovery takes much longer. The hip injury I picked up a month ago is still painful and although it isn't as bad as it was, it's still the reason I stopped just short of two miles today. I have a physio appointment tomorrow which I am really looking forward to - I'm hoping they're going to be able to fix me, and offer advice on how I can warm up properly to prevent any future injuries. That said, we've now introduced solid food into Ruby's diet so I'll be giving up feeding her myself shortly - hopefully that will also make a difference.
I think that if I'd thought my route through a little better this morning I would've been able to push on a little further - unfortunately I was too busy concentrating on breathing and putting one foot in front of the other to notice where I was going, and ended up finishing on a nasty incline. That said, I was pretty proud of myself for running the last half km uphill - it was touch and go, and I nearly vommed at the end of the road, but I was so determined I actually ran it faster than the previous half km. My hip started to feel very twinge-y by that point, so I walked the remainder of the way home - it's still hurting a little but I was so happy I'd finally managed to get out there I couldn't care less.
This week, I'm going to let Jillian Michaels beast me around my living room every day and we have a group training session on The Stray. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Team Raw has progressed, although I will secretly hate them all for being amazing when I haven't been able to train. Apparently we'll be focusing on lifting, pulling and core strength so hopefully I won't have fallen too far behind.
Lastly, all my hard work seems to be paying off - I have now lost all my baby weight and am half a stone lighter than before I was pregnant - maybe there's something to be said for all this clean living malarkey... I might have a little glass of vin rouge to celebrate.
I started this ridiculous challenge to get fit, healthy and to achieve something I could be truly proud of. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but my determination and sparkly* personality would shine through and I would strut muddily over the finish line with abs of steel, thrusting my well-deserved beer skyward. I was ready for it. I put in the first gruelling weeks - I was getting there, I had the bug.

Unfortunately, I was then hit with knee-gate, hip-gate and now gastroenteritis, erm, gate. Since deciding on running Tough Mudder I haven't had such a terrible run of injury/illness. Yesterday, I felt as sick as a rabid dog (and probably looked worse - I was sick in my hair). I had to change my physio appointment to next week for fear of unleashing the sickness bug to a waiting room full of people and am now holed up in bed waiting for it to pass.

Seriously, I don't ask for a lot. I just want to run without damaging my knee or putting my hip out. Apparently, this won't be possible for a little while though and it's all down to the amount of progesterone my body is producing post-baby. This makes everything 'looser' (crikey, Dr Lucy, tactful), meaning it's much easier to injure yourself and your recovery time doubles. This is not ideal. I am very aware that I have only notched up 12 miles to date and am going to have to seriously motor if I'm going to even complete the course.

My hip is actually feeling much better, so tomorrow morning (tummy troubles aside) I'm going to attempt a steady couple of kilometres. I know I'm just one good run away from getting my mojo back.

Wish me luck.
I managed 20 press ups and can now do almost 70 sit-ups in a row. I was under my calorie goal on My Fitness Pal despite eating chinese food and drinking beer. I also got some beautiful new trainers as a gift from baby Ruby on my first ever Mother's Day.

Unfortunately, these little nuggets of joy have been eclipsed by a new injury, much worse than the previous knee-gate. After a lovely run last week, I jarred my hip - a couple of painful days later I felt it click, and two days later it felt fine - good enough to run on (or so I thought). On Thursday, I set off planning to stick to a steady 3k - after just .5k it became apparent that it was not at all fine, but instead of stopping, cutting my losses and going home to rest, I was determined to see out the distance. I really wish I wasn't so bloody minded - not only was it incredibly painful, I couldn't concentrate on a decent route and my overall time was absolute garbage.

Two days later and I am actually struggling to walk and my GP has referred me for an X-Ray. Bad times. The most annoying thing is that I clearly didn't learn from my previous mistake and went back out too early. Anyway, hopefully it isn't anything too serious - I had hoped to be on at least 25 miles by the end of this week - I would've been on schedule if it wasn't for my 90 year old body.

Moving on - I have a couple of exciting races planned so I'm just going to focus on some low impact cardio and strength exercises until I'm all fixed.

The first race is the Harrogate 10k on 22nd July - from the small amount of research I have done, it is a pretty tough course with steady inclines at the beginning but a fast final downhill mile. I imagine I'll end up windmilling over the finish line - but as long as it's sub 60 minutes I'll be happy.

On Monday 27th August, I'll be running the Whirlow 10k Trail Run, which is part of the Big Running Weekend. This will be my first trail run, and it promises to be a great little warm up to the Tough Mudder event. It will also make a nice change not to be either steaming drunk or feel like my brain is falling out of my arse, as is usually the case over August Bank Holiday weekend. I'm going to try and persuade the Twitter running collective to join me on this one - most of them live in Sheffield so there's no excuse really.

On that note, I have to say a big thank you to Emma and Andy for their lovely blog posts this week - if you haven't read them already, then take a look. Emma is ridiculously talented at making stuff - it's seriously amazing. If you can imagine it, she can make it - only better. Luckily, she is also helping me to re-design this blog, with a proper header and sexy new font, which I hope to have live by this time next week - exciting times!
Andy is running the London Marathon next month and his blog is inspiring stuff - full of ups and downs but always a dose of good humour - check it out.

I've never been one to count calories - I've always been fairly happy with my size and have never owned a set of weighing scales - as far as I'm concerned, if I can do my jeans up straight from the wash without having to roll around on the floor too much then it's all good.

Since having Ruby and embarking on this challenge, things have changed slightly. I am a lot more aware of what I am putting into my body knowing that Ruby will eventually be eating the same, albeit in a slightly different format, and I have also been doing a bit of reading up on nutrition and sport - it turns out that you really do get out what you put in. Bloody clichés.

So, one week into the food diary: I'd like to say it was painstaking, but it really wasn't - the App holds nutritional info for pretty much every product you can think of, so it's really simple. At the end of each day it will tell you whether you are over or under your calorie goal, and what weight this would make you by your target date.

What makes it really interesting is that it also gives you consumption targets for vitamins and minerals - something I just assumed would be easily achieved. At the end of week one, I have fallen off my homemade pedestal after a series of startling results: 9% Iron, 22% Calcium and just 6% Vitamin A.
This is bad times. A lack of iron leads to fatigue, weakness and irritability, as well as affecting the uptake of vitamin A. Bearing in mind I only achieved 6% of my Vitamin A target, this is not ideal. On to Calcium; depriving yourself of the recommended amount can lead to Osteoporosis and something called 'Bone Spurs'. Sounds fun, but it's really not - when the body lacks Calcium, it starts to leach it from your bones, usually through your heels, leading to to little explosions, not dissimilar to volcanic eruptions. Bork.

Worryingly, I also consumed 95g too much sugar. I am blaming this on an addiction to Milky Bar desserts, but in reality, a lot of the sugar is contained in my morning cereal.

This week, I'm going to make a real effort to cut down on the sugar and up the vitamin/Calcium content to see if it makes any difference to my energy levels.

Sam xSamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00536063359916269317noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6800440856228277748.post-28083204470505733692012-03-17T14:04:00.000+00:002012-03-17T14:27:21.848+00:00Back in the Game! After a fairly dreadful start to the week, I have definitely finished on a high. I developed a nasty sore throat/cough/migraine combination which, coupled with my poorly knee left me unable to exercise at all. I think it was my body's way of telling me to chill out for a few days and not rush back into things; rendering me almost unconscious for a few days certainly did the trick.

I won't lie, I was absolutely dreading my first run back (I haven't been out for almost two weeks). I tried lying to myself and feigning excitement but I knew that those two weeks would pretty much take me back to the beginning, which was utterly soul destroying. The first couple of weeks are the hardest. Well, they were for me - I had no rhythm or sense of improvement, but I did have bucket-loads of enthusiasm, which I tried to muster before heading out.

I had to force myself out of the door when my alarm went off at 7am - only the knowledge that more people would see me breathlessly stumbling around if I waited until 8am spurred me on. I had already decided that 3k would be plenty for a first visit back - 5k was too ambitious and I didn't want to beat myself up for not hitting target. It was really tough but the .5k markers on my Nike+ really helped, as did my route, which was slightly downhill on the way back. I made 3.23k in 18'14.

I was pretty stunned when I converted everything to miles - I'd run two miles, averaging 9'04 per mile. No wonder I couldn't breathe - my previous PB for a mile was 9'29. So I felt pretty smug. I'm sure that if I'd pushed for the extra mile my average would've dropped to way past my PB time, but as a first jaunt out after two weeks of feeing like I'd just been dug up, I was very happy.

Lesson learnt - allow your body adequate time to rest. So, while I was itching to get out this morning, I am now allowing myself a rest day every other day. On these days, I'm working on strength by doing the 100 Push Up and 200 Sit Up Challenges. I was able to start on week three of the Sit Up Challenge, but have the upper body strength of a flaccid octopus, so began the Push Up element firmly on week one. 10 push ups is excruciating, so if I can do 100 in a row after just six weeks I'll be very happy (and surprised). I have added a Squat Challenge into this, which is the same as the sit ups, along with 200 cross body punches in squat position. It burns like a bitch.

Tomorrow, we are heading over to Bolton Abbey so I can do some interval training (as recommended by the lovely Mira). Hopefully there won't be too many people around to laugh at me attempting to sprint up a hill - must remember my mantra; dead last finish beats did not finish, which trumps did not start. Least I'll be working for my big, fat Mother's Day lunch :-)

I'm going to start concentrating on strength and ab work so I feel like I'm not going backwards - anything to stop myself feeling guilty about my new Wagon Wheel addiction. It's strange that when I'm training, I have no desire at all to eat sweet things, but when I'm sat at home moping around all I can think about is carbs. Carbface.

So, other than a sit-up and press-up competition with the OH later (he thinks I can't do 50 sit-ups in a row - I actually have abs of steel under the baby chubbs), I have nothing new to report. Instead, I thought it would be fun (in a tortuous way) to look at the different obstacles we could be facing along the course in November.

The event will take place at Cholmondeley Castle on 17th & 18th November. Team RAW will be competing on the Sunday, so if you fancy a giggle then head down and give us a cheer. Pompoms will be provided. We also need an official photographer who can help us out with some press-worthy snaps of us at various points, so if you fancy yourself as a bit of a Demarchelier, let me know.

Having looked at the course map, it would appear the first obstacle isn't really an obstacle after all:

1. Braveheart Charge - charge into battle with 5,000 other Mudders. Battle cries essential.

I have a problem with situations like this - my adrenaline goes into overdrive and I get really jumpy. It's the main reason I'll never go paintballing again - some strange feeling came over me last time and I ended up charging at people screaming like a banshee and popping them in the face with the paintballing equivalent of an AK47. They were on the same team. The RAF really did have a narrow miss (I nearly joined up in 2000).

Anyway, it's the first in a series of 27 over the 12 miles. You'll be pleased to know they get much, much more tricky. Yay.
Huge.Ahhh, nothing quite beats the feeling you get when you realise you've monumentally cocked something up. I realised this on Monday after half an hour of Jillian Michaels busting my balls while I pranced around my parents' living room to a series of embarrassingly difficult cardio moves.
It was a rookie mistake - I had rested my knee for a couple of days and was feeling guilty for not running. It was still a little painful but instead of taking the advice of seasoned running pro's and resting it, I cracked on with a bit of Shred.
Anyway, four days later and it's still not right - stupid knee of doom.

To try and feed my new running addiction while I'm out of action, I went into Up & Running in Harrogate to look at all the pretty running shoes. The very helpful man told me to go back when my knee is a little bit better and I can have a pop on the swanky treadmill - apparently it will tell me all that is wrong with my feet so they can recommend the right trainers. I have my eye on a really cute pair of New Balance 749s, but he assured me that the right pair for me would undoubtedly be the ugliest pair in the shop - because life is a bit of a shit like that. I appreciated his honesty but it left a slightly sour taste - taking the (giant) leap from fashion to functionality might be a little more tricky than I first thought.
After test-running this blog out on a couple of regular runners, it was brought to my attention that I haven't actually mentioned the charity we will be raising money for during our training for Tough Mudder. It seems even more apt and very much close to home after the recent untimely deaths of six servicemen in Afghanistan. Help for Heroes is a great charity which supports wounded members of our armed forces on their return to civilian life, and the whole Raw team is thrilled to be able to show our appreciation in this small way.

When our team entry is finalised we'll be creating a JustGiving page where donations can be made if anyone would like to. The event is still quite a way away though and I'm sure most people will want to see a bit more blood, sweat and tears on my part before they let the moths out of their wallets.
I've also been hugely inspired by Bangs and a Bun; she started running just a year and a half ago and has since completed some serious runs, most recently today's Paris Half Marathon. In four weeks she heads to Berlin for theirs. I have followed her journey from her first run, so it is great comfort to know that if I am dedicated enough, I could be where she is now - celebrating in an awesome city with a sparkly new medal. And yes, that is important.

I have also been putting a little bit of thought into why I performed better on the treadmill - I suppose for a long-time runners the reason is obvious - pacing and timing. I am not great at pacing myself, setting off quickly and fading fast before completing my run at a snail's pace. On the treadmill I can keep it constant, my mile time fluctuating by a couple of seconds at the most. My conclusion is that I should probably try and spend a little more time in the gym, just to practice running at a constant pace. This pains me - I hate gyms and the thought of spending any amount of time (let alone money) in them fills me with dread. But I am determined to crack this running malarkey whatever it takes - I just wish their was a Pure Gym in Harrogate - all the ones here are so expensive, it would actually be cheaper to just buy a treadmill, if I had somewhere to put one.

Lastly, as ongoing motivation, I have persuaded my OH to run the Harrogate 10k with me in July. A really good benchmark to reach by the midway point of my training. Bring it on!

Last week, Nicole and I ran the Harrogate Park Run for the first time. If you haven't encountered Park Run before, then you should definitely check it out - it's a free event set up by a group of seriously dedicated running enthusiasts - their aim? To raise awareness of how great running is, the camaraderie involved and most of all just to get people doing it.

Anyway, we started the race full of trepidation - neither of us had run a Park Run before, and prior to our group training session, it had been some nine years since I had run at all (except when I was late for a bus). To be honest, we weren't great, finishing 152 out of 160 runners. But we really didn't care - the fact that we had actually hauled our asses out of bed for 9am on a Saturday and run around the park for three miles is testament to our dedication to the cause - especially as Nicole even body swerved her regular Friday night booze-up.

My plan from then was to include the Park Run in my weekly training schedule - their barcode system allows you to record your time and monitor progression on a weekly basis, something which I definitely need in order to keep myself motivated. This weekend, I am visiting my parents up here in Inverness, so I was hoping to run the Park Run up here, however, I jolted my knee on the treadmill yesterday and have had to give it a miss.

One of the things I have been thinking about is my footwear - this will be the first time I will buy a pair of shoes for their practical functionality rather than for their prettiness (although I'm hoping I can keep an element of this). My lovely friend, Emma has just had special insoles made for her running shoes at the Sweatshop in Meadowhall, which will support her knees more. I'm starting to think that if I'm going to be putting 750 miles in between now and November, I'd better look at investing as well.

I'm pretty gutted to be honest - I know there's no harm in missing one session, but I had worked hard on my runs all week, finishing with a PB time of 9'27 mi yesterday on the treadmill, so was pretty fired up.

Inverness is just beautiful though, so fingers crossed if I rest up today and perhaps tomorrow, I can head out on a circuit of my own and work on that 5k time.
